Artist's impression of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS). Carrying ten instru- ments,UARS has an operational life of up to 3 years. The instruments are designed to measure the structure and dynamics of the upper atmosphere, energy input and levels of energy loss. UARS will help scientists understand the effect of the upper atmosphere on global climates, and will assist in monitoring the depletion of the ozone layer resulting from man-made pollutants such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The UARS sate- llite was launched on Shuttle mission STS-48 on 12 September 1991 | |
