Artemis satellite. Artwork of the Artemis satellite showing the SILEX laser data link. SILEX (Semiconductor Laser Intersatellite Link Experiment) uses a near-infrared laser to provide data exchange between satellites in orbit. Initially, laser communication will be limited to the Spot 4 earth observation satellite and Japan's OICETS test satellite. Each terminal consists of a 25-cm telescope, with the gallium-aluminium- arsenic (GaAlAs) laser for transmission and a silicon avalanche photodiode for reception. Artemis is due for launch in 1997 | |
