Simulation of a manned Mars mission. Habitation module (lower right) at FMARS,the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station, located in the Canadian Arctic. FMARS is one of several Mars simulation programs run by the international Mars Society. The aim is to test equipment and habitat designs in harsh conditions like those found on Mars, and to observe the effect on human crews. Work outside is carried out in spacesuits, and communications with the outside world are subject to the time delay that would affect real communications from Mars. Work at FMARS is carried out over several months in the Arctic summer. Several missions have been completed since the project began in 2000 | |
