Artist's impression of astronauts breaking ground for a proposed observatory on the Moon. This is part of a NASA study into possible manned utilisation of the Moon. The observatory would be sited on the far side of the Moon,as it is both seismically stable and shielded from the electronic noise from Earth. In the background is the reflector of a giant radio telescope, built into a crater. The observatory would include optical, ultraviolet and infrared telescopes benefitting from the lack of any atmospheric distortion. The low gravity would enable large reflectors to be built with little supporting structure,a limiting factor back on Earth | |
