Final checks being made to Space Shuttle Endeavour, nine days before roll-out from Rockwell International's Palmdale plant in April 1991. Endeavour (OV-105) is the fifth Space Shuttle to be built, replacing Shuttle Challenger. The two main improvements over the existing Shuttle fleet are the inclusion of a tail parachute to reduce landing distances (to be retrofitted to other orbiters) and the capacity to be modified for extended duration flights. These will initially be up to 16 days, further modification will allow 28-day missions. Endeavour will perform its first mission,STS-49,in the summer of 1992. OV-105 is named after Captain Cook's ship,HMS Endeavour | |
