Workers at Rockwell International's factory in Palmdale painting insignia on the wing of Space Shuttle Endeavour. Endeavour (OV-105) is the fifth Space Shuttle to be built, replacing Shuttle Challenger. The two main improvements over the existing Shuttle fleet are the inclusion of a tail parachute to reduce landing distances (to be retrofitted to other orbiters) and the capacity to be modified for extended duration flights. These will initially be up to 16 days, further modification will allow 28-day missions. Endeavour will perform its first mission,STS-49,in the summer of 1992. OV-105 is named after Captain Cook's ship,HMS Endeavour | |
