Working on the Moon: Astronaut Scott uses a battery-powered drill during the Apollo 15 mission. The drill was used to create a hole 2.4 metres deep in the lunar surface. A probe was planted in this hole to measure heat flowing from the Moon's interior. The small box in the foreground is a solar wind spectrometer, also part of the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package (ALSEP). Apollo 15 was launched on 26 July 1971,astronauts David Scott and James Irwin landing on the Moon on 30 July 1971. During their 67-hour stay on the Moon, they made three excursions totalling 18 hours 35 minutes. This included the first use of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) | |
