MODEL RELEASED. Ariane rocket construction. Technicians construct part of an Ariane 4 rocket. The second stage of the rocket is being constructed here. The second stage's Viking 4 rocket motor does not take part in the earliest part of the launch. Instead it ignites fully when the lower (Stage 1) section has run out of fuel and is jettisoned from the launcher. The Viking 4 rocket motor burns a mixture of hydrazine hydrate and nitrogen tetroxide. Thirty-four tonnes of this propellant is burnt in 124 seconds to create an average thrust in a vacuum of 786 kilonewtons. Photographed in Germany | |
