Rocket testing control room,test stand number 1,Peenemunde,Germany. This testing ground was established by the German military in 1937. At right,one of two people looking through the periscope,is the principal engineer and technical director Wernher von Braun (1912-1977). Periscopes were used to observe the tests from underground control rooms. The most famous of the missiles developed here was the A-4 rocket,better known as the V-2,which was used during World War II.
