Optical photograph of quasar 3C 273 (centre),showing its faint jet extending outwards at lower right. The quasar itself is thought by most astronomers to be a black hole lying at the centre of a faint, distant galaxy. The jet is a powerful beam of fast-moving charged particles ejected from the nucleus and extends an estimated 1.2 million light years out into space. 3C 273 is the nearest known quasar, lying some 2100 million light years away from Earth.
