Quasar. Artwork of a quasar at the centre of a galaxy. Quasars are immensely distant objects, and so are seen as they were many billions of years ago in the early history of the universe. They are also extremely bright, pouring out massive amounts of energy. It is thought that this radiation is from material that fell into a supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy. It was thought that the host galaxy would be large or distorted, but observations by the Gemini Observatory in 2004 have found that the galaxies are probably normal in size and shape. It is thought that quasars went inactive as they ran out of cold gas and dust from the early universe to fuel them | |
