Optical CCD (Charge Coupled Device) image of a star cluster in the inner part of the spiral galaxy M33 (NGC 598). The cluster is visible as a fuzzy knot of blue stars at the bottom centre. M33 is situated at a distance of about 2.4 million light years and is a member of the Local Group to which our galaxy belongs. M33 is classified as a Sc type and it is the nearest of this group to our own galaxy. Many objects have been resolved in its arms such as stars clusters, supergiant and variable stars and clouds of ionised hydrogen (HII regions). This image was obtained with blue-green,red and near infrared filters and it may be considered a true colour version | |
