Andromeda Galaxy. Coloured radio image of the Great Andromeda Galaxy (M31; NGC 224). The colours represent intensity, from blue (weakest) to red (strongest). Andromeda's magnetic field & cosmic- ray particles are concentrated in a ring around its centre at a distance of about 30,000 light years (LY). Black lines have been added to show the magnetic field's orientation. New star forma- tion in the ring-like region may be aided by the magnetic fields. The Andromeda spiral galaxy is the nearest to our own, being 2.2 million LY from Earth. Image taken at a wavelength of 6.3 centimetres by the Effelsberg telescope,Germany | |
