The Antennae galaxies, composite image. The Antennae are formed of two galaxies (NGC 4038 and NGC 4039) colliding due to mutual gravitational attraction. This results in massive areas of starbirth around the galactic nuclei (white). The Antennae are so named due to the long trails of gas and stars extending towards upper left and lower right. The galaxies lie some 62 million light years from Earth in the constellation Corvus. Image produced using radio data from the Very Large Array (VLA) telescope | |
