Spiral galaxy ESO 269-G57. This galaxy, which is nearly 200,000 light years across,is 155 million light years from Earth,in the constellation of Centaurus. The central galactic nucleus (yellow) is surrounded by an inner ring of tightly wound spiral arms. Spiralling out from this are two more diffuse spiral arms. The spiral arms and the inner ring contain areas of star formation (blue). The rest of the image includes foreground stars and distant background galaxies. ESO 269-G57 was discovered during the ESO/Uppsala Survey of the Southern Skies in the 1970s. The data for this image was obtained with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) using the Antu and FORS1 instruments on 27 March 1999 | |
