Peculiar galaxy. Optical image of part of the peculiar galaxy NGC 4438,or Arp 120. The bright, diffuse cloud of the galaxy's stars is partly obscured by brown dust lanes in the galaxy's structure. The bright core (left) has a pinkish bubble of material, thought to be gas ejected by the supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy. NGC 4438 is about 50 million light years from Earth in the constellation Virgo. This image was made using the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) on the Hubble Space Telescope | |
