M74 spiral galaxy. Composite of optical and ultraviolet images showing the spiral galaxy M74. M74 is seen nearly face-on and is about 24 million light years from Earth. The optical emission is shown in red and yellow, the ultraviolet emission is in blue and white. The ultraviolet emission is not uniformly distributed but is confined to discrete regions within the spiral arms which branch from the nucleus of the galaxy. These are regions mainly occupied by young and hot stars and where stellar formation is taking place. The ultraviolet image was taken by the ASTRO-1 telescope on board the Space Shuttle | |
