Optical CCD (Charge Coupled Device) image of the dwarf elliptical galaxy Leo-I which belongs to our Local Group of galaxies. LEO-I is situated at a distance of about 750,000 light years and has a diameter of 3000 light years. Dwarf elliptical galaxies are very small, dominated by a population of old yellow and red stars and without any trace of interstellar gas. There are about 30 galaxies in the Local Group of which the most important are the Andromeda spiral (M31),our galaxy, the Triangulum spiral (M33) and the two Clouds of Magellan. This image was obtained with blue-green,red and near infrared filters and it may be considered a true colour version | |
