Galactic centre. Gamma ray image of the centre of our galaxy, the Milky Way. The yellow area (near centre, labelled Sgr A*) marks gamma ray emission by the super-massive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy. The red region (centre left, labelled Sgr B2) is a nebula of hydrogen gas about 350 light years from Sgr A*. It is absorbing and re-emitting gamma rays emitted from the central black hole 350 years ago, showing that Sgr A* was more active then than today. Other gamma ray sources are also seen.
