X-ray image of parts of the constellations of Ophiuchus and Sagittarius, looking toward the centre of the galaxy, made by the ROSAT satellite. The X-ray sources seen here are extraordinarily bright, typical of sources that are close to the galactic centre. Of particular interest are Kepler's supernova remnant (SN 1604),and the Terzan 2 X-ray burst source. The Moon is seen just to the right of centre frame as it entered the telescope's field of view twice during the exposure. ROSAT is a German/UK/USA collaboration, and was launched on 1 June 1990 | |
