The colours represent observed intensity,from dark blue (faintest),through light blue,green,and yellow to red (brightest). The Milky Way appears as a band because the astronomical bodies within it are too numerous to be seen individually. They are numerous because an observ- er looking in their direction is viewing along the plane of our galaxy's disk. Image made by combining observations at a wavelength of 20 centimetres from the 25-metre telescopes at Stockert in Germany,and Villa Elisa in Argentina
