The gamma ray sky is dominated by emmissions from exploding stars and black holes lying within our galaxy and by the energetic cores of distant active galaxies. Ordinary,middle-aged stars like the Sun are almost invisible at gamma ray wavelengths. The image shows the band of the Milky Way running from lower left to upper right.
