Far-infrared image of the whole sky, showing the Milky Way,taken by the Diffuse Infrared Back- ground Experiment on board the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite. The image combines images made at wavelengths of 25,60 & 100 microns, represented repectively in blue, green & red. At these wavelengths the infrared sky is dominated by radiation from cold dust located in the vast clouds of gas & dust which lie between the stars in our galaxy (bright horizontal band). The faint,S-shaped blue band running from upper right to lower left is emission from dust lying within the solar system. The bright spots within this band are mostly sightings of the Moon | |
