Extrasolar planet. Artwork of a hypothetical extrasolar planet surface. This planet orbits the M2-9 planetary nebula, also known as the Siamese Squid nebula. Planetary nebulae form when a Sun- like star runs out of fuel near the end of its life. The core contracts and heats up and the outer layers are cast off into space. Radiation from the exposed core ionises the gas shells, causing them to emit light. The star becomes a white dwarf which emits strong ultraviolet radiation. M2-9 lies 2100 light years away in the Opiuchis constellation | |
