Two optical images of the same small starfield in the galactic cluster NGC 188,a subject to compare the resolution of a ground based image (left) and the Hubble Space Telescope (right). The field contains two stars separated by 2.9 arcseconds in the sky,at a distance of 5,000 light years. The blurred,ground-based image was obtained with the 2.5 meter Nordic Optical Telescope on La Palma. The HST image was one of the first obtained with the Faint Object Camera, with the telescope not yet completely in focus. The improved resolution is apparent, revealing two sharp cores surrounded by diffuse halos | |
