Globular star cluster NGC 6397. This star cluster is located 7200 light years away in the constellation Ara. It has a very densely packed core, making star collisions relatively common. The collision of 2 or 3 old yellow stars forms new stars called blue stragglers. At top left is a red giant,an expanding star that has run out of hydrogen fuel. Photographed by the Wide-Field- Imager on the ESO/MPI 2.2m telescope at the La Silla Observatory,Chile.
