M4 globular star cluster (NGC 6121). Globular star clusters are large,densely-packed balls of old stars. M4 is about 75 light years across. At about 7000 light years away,it is among the two closest globular star clusters. M4 is in the constellation Scorpius, part of the spherical halo that globular star clusters form around the Milky Way Galaxy. White dwarf stars and a planet have been found in M4 by the Hubble Space Telescope. M4's brightness is obscured by interstellar dust clouds. The image was taken by the T2KA camera on the KPNO 0.9-metre telescope,Kitt Peak,Arizona,USA,in March 1995 | |
