M3 globular star cluster (NGC 5272). Globular star clusters are large,densely-packed balls of old stars. M3 contains over 500,000 stars and is about 160 light years across. Globular star clusters form a spherical halo around the Milky Way Galaxy, which includes M3 at a distance of around 100,000 light years in the constellation Canes Venatici.
