Starry sky. The top part of the frame is occupied by the constellation of Gemini whereas the pattern of the constellation of Orion is easily recognisable at centre right. Here the Orion nebula (M42) is visible as a pink spot. M42 lies at a distance of about 1500 light years from the Earth and is a giant cloud of dust and gas lit up by the ultraviolet radiation of a cluster, the Trapezium,of young and hot stars. At bottom left the constellation of Canis major is found. It is dominated by the presence of Sirius which is the brightest star in the sky. The image was taken from Vancouver,Canada | |
