Jet from a young star. Visible light image of one end of the Herbig-Haro object HH-1/HH-2,a jet of gas ejected by a young star,as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope. This image shows a close-up view of the bow-shock patterns produced as the rapidly-moving gas jet encounters a region of interstellar gas. The jet is composed of gas emitted along the rotational axis of the young star. This may remove excess angular momentum which would otherwise prevent new material accreting to the star. HH-1/HH-2 is located some 1500 light years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Orion | |
