Optical image of the Eta Carinae nebula as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) after the servicing mission which took place in December 1993. Eta Carinae is a massive (150 solar masses),eruptive variable star (bright at very centre) which has expelled a large amount of gas. This has led to the formation of a two lobe nebula, mainly formed by dust, which shows a granular surface with clumps of gas with sizes comparable to that of our solar system. The red outer glow is mainly composed of nitrogen and other elements formed in the interior of the star and subsequently ejected into interstellar space | |
