Elephant's Trunk nebula, infrared image. This nebula, also called IC 1396 and VdB 142,lies some 2400 light years from Earth in the constellation Cepheus. It is a site of star formation, where embryonic stars are produced within the dark dust clouds (centre). These hot young stars ionise the surrounding hydrogen gas, causing it to glow red.
