Seagull nebula, optical image. The seagull is made up of the head (NGC 2327,round,upper centre) and the wings and body (IC 2177,covering much of the lower part of the image). The nebulae glow red as the hydrogen they contain is ionised by radiation from hot young stars embedded within them. The nebulae lie around 1800 light years from Earth on the border between the constellations Canis Major and Monoceros | |
