Emission nebula Herbig-Haro 666 (HH 666),optical image. A young stellar object, hidden in this image, spurts out ionised gas along its polar axis at speeds of up to 800,000 kmph, producing an outflow stretching for 10 light years or more. This jet is in the Carina nebula,a star-forming region visible from the Southern Hemisphere. Outflows such as this are known as Herbig-Haro emission nebulae, and they are important in the formation of new low- to intermediate-mass stars.
