Tarantula Nebula, infrared Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) image. The SST's infrared imaging sees past clouds of dust to newborn stars inside active nebulae. The Tarantula Nebula (30 Doradus) has a central cluster of stars (NGC 2070 or R136),the bright white area at centre left. The surrounding gas and dust (red and green) has been blown into swirling patterns by these energetic stars. It is thought that intense episodes of star formation take place here every few million years. The Tarantula Nebula lies in the Large Magellanic Cloud,a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way,and is around 163,000 light years from Earth. Image published in 2004 | |
