Rosette Nebula. Coloured optical image of the Rosette Nebula (NGC 2237-39). This is a large starbirth region which glows due to ionisation of its gases by radiation from a cluster of hot young stars (NGC 2244) at its centre. The strong stellar winds from these stars cleared the central hole. This nebula is 100 light years wide and lies 5000 light years from Earth in the constellation Monoceros.
