Optical image of the emission nebula NGC 6357,located about 5500 light years away from Earth in the constellation of Scorpius. It is a cloud of hydrogen (60 light years across) ionised and lit up by young, hot, blue stars embedded in it. However,NGC 6357 does not show any evidence of a blue component in its colour. This is due to a phenomenon, known as interstellar reddening, caused by clouds of dust situated between the nebula and the Earth which predominantly absorb the radiation emitted at "blue" wavelengths | |
