Ursa Minor. Constellation Ursa Minor (the Little Bear or Little Dipper) seen in the night sky. Ursa Minor contains the north pole star (Polaris, bright star, upper left),used by mariners for centuries to help with navigation at sea. Polaris forms the tip of the constellation's long tail, which ends in a box-shaped bowl (lower right, between the silhouetted dome and spire). At the top right corner of the bowl is Kochab (Ursae Minoris),a bright, yellowish star often mistaken for Polaris. Kochab was in fact the star closest to the pole for the Greeks 3000 years ago | |
