Cassiopeia and Andromeda. Optical image of the constellations of Cassiopeia and Andromeda. Cassiopeia is the wide "W" shape of five stars at upper centre. Andromeda is represented by the brighter stars in lower frame. The famous Andromeda galaxy (M31) can be seen as a smudge of light with a white nucleus at lower right. This is our nearest spiral galaxy, and is the largest in the "local group". It lies around 2 million light years away. The Milky Way,part of our own galaxy, passes through Cassiopeia, seen as a bluish band of light against the black of space. North is at top | |
