Solar flare. SOHO (Solar Heliospheric Observatory) ultraviolet image of the chromosphere layer of the Sun's atmosphere, with a solar flare at upper right. Solar flares are eruptions caused by an escape of cool, dense, ionised gas from the low- level magnetic fields which normally confine it. This gas will stream away from the Sun to form part of the solar wind. The light seen here has a wavelength of 30.4 nanometres & is being produced by doubly-charged helium ions at a temperature of 60,000 degrees celsius.
