Annular solar eclipse. Solar ring seen around the Moon at the midpoint of an annular solar eclipse. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes across the Sun as seen from Earth. This only occurs at New Moon, and is most commonly a partial eclipse. When the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun and is close to the Earth,a total solar eclipse takes place, revealing the Sun's corona. When the Moon is at a distant point in its orbit,an annular solar eclipse occurs and the corona remains hidden due to the brightness of the visible solar ring.
