Partial solar eclipse. Crescent-shaped Sun seen on the horizon during a partial solar eclipse. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes across the Sun as seen from Earth. This only occurs at New Moon, and is most commonly a partial eclipse, when only part of the Sun is eclipsed. Sometimes, usually less than once a year,a total solar eclipse takes place. This happens when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun. Partial eclipses are visible from a larger area of the Earth's surface than total solar eclipses. Photographed in Brazil in 1999 | |
