Annular solar eclipse photographed over California on 4 January 1992. Much of the view of this eclipse has been obscured by cloud cover. The colour of the Sun is orange/yellow as the eclipse occurred just before sunset. An annular eclipse is seen when the Earth is relatively close to the Sun (near perihelion) and the Moon is relatively far (near apogee). The disc of the Moon seen from the Earth is then smaller than that of the Sun,so a ring (or annulus) of the Sun's surface remains visible. When the Earth is further from the Sun and closer to the Moon, the same alignment will result in a total solar eclipse | |
