Sunset seen in orbit. View of the setting Sun,an image made by the crew of Shuttle Columbia during Mission STS-52 whilst passing over South Africa in October 1992. The position of the Sun allows a good profile of the atmosphere to be seen due to differential scattering of the light. Close to the horizon is a deep red band, thought to be caused by smoke from biomass burning. The purple layer is the tropopause which confines a layer of dust and aerosols at an altitude of 14 kilometers. Above this is the pale stratosphere, with a white layer some 26 kilometres above the surface. The white layer is thought to contain acid droplets and sulphate particles of volcanic origin | |
