Halley's Comet. Woodcut of Halley's Comet from a book published in 1532. Petrus Apianus,professor of mathematics at Ingolstadt,Germany (1495-1520),was one of the first observers to recognise that the tails of comets always point away from the Sun. This fact is amply illustrated in the woodcut that appears on the title page of his Practica,the third part of which is devoted to a description of the comet he observed in 1531,now known as Halley's Comet
