Optical composite image of Comet Halley taken on December 9th 1985. It was obtained by super- imposing three exposures at red, green and blue wavelengths made by the 1.2m UK Schmidt Telescope at Siding Spring,Australia. The telescope tracked the comet which was moving relatively faster against the starry background, resulting in the stars being trailed. The comet's tail, seen here in its early formation,is formed by dust particles evaporating from the cometary nucleus as the comet approaches the Sun | |
