The nucleus of Comet Halley seen from different distances by the Giotto spacecraft on the night of 13-14 March,1986. Halley's nucleus has a potato shape with dimensions 8.2x 8.4x16km and a mass of about 100 billion tons. On its left edge two active sites are clearly visible. Here the water ice, heated by sunlight, sublimates to form an atmosphere, also known as the coma. The escaping gases sweep up particles of dust which are carried from the nucleus into the coma. These particles form the comet's tail | |
