False-colour image of the nucleus of Comet Halley, seen by the Giotto spacecraft on the night of 13/14 March 1986. The nucleus is in the right hand side of the frame. The bright region just right of centre (pale colours) and the pink/orange area just below this are the light surface spots seen on later monochrome images. Bright material from these spots was seen sublimating sunward into the comet's coma. The dark blue area near bottom right is part of the comet's night side. This image, made by the Halley Multicolour Camera, was displayed on the night of Giotto's encounter,13/14 March 1986 | |
