Comet Hale-Bopp. Coloured visible-light image of Comet Hale-Bopp. The colours relate to brightness. The core of the comet is just right of centre, and is surrounded by a bright coma (magenta & green). Comet Hale-Bopp was discovered on 23 July 1995. It is expected to be a bright object, visible to the naked eye,in northern skies in March 1997. Comets are relatively small objects,a few tens of kilometres across, made of ice and dust. As they approach the Sun in their highly-elongated orbits, ice and dust evaporate from their surface, and are blown into 'tails' by the solar wind. Photographed on 9 August 1996 | |
