Comet Tempel 1 (centre),Deep Impact mission target, negative telescope image. The Deep Impact mission was launched on 12th January 2005 and will encounter this comet in July 2005. It will then launch a 370-kilogram impactor, which will strike the comet at nearly 37,000 kilometres per hour. This impact,on 4th July, will excavate a crater around 100 metres wide and eject a large amount of cometary material into space. The spacecraft will study the amount and composition of the ejecta. As comets are relics left over from the formation of the solar system, this will provide information on its history and formation. This image was taken on 3rd April 2005 | |
